On Monday, the United States Department of Justice filed a slew of criminal charges against Huawei—the second-largest smartphone maker in the world after Samsung, with aspirations to be a one-stop shop for all things 5G—as well as its CFO Meng Wanzhou.
Huawei has been accused of bank fraud, obstruction of justice, and theft of technology from US telecommunications company provider T-Mobile.
Acting US Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said during a press conference that the Justice Department was planning to file a formal extradition request and all the necessary documentation under the extradition treaty. January 30th is the deadline for the US government to submit this request.
Meng was arrested in Canada on Dec 1st, 2018, following a request made by the US government, which alleges that Huawei misled international institutions to do business in Iran, violating sanctions on the regime. Meng was later released on bail, and has been under surveillance and monitored via an ankle tag since then.
