Tencent expands its cloud business into Japan

Tencent Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Chinese social and gaming giant Tencent, says it has entered the Japanese market to provide one-stop cloud computing service, according to a Tencent press release.

Internationalization is a key strategy for Tencent Cloud, said the firm’s vice president Da Zhiqian. It has set a goal of achieving a 4 to 5 times increase in global business and the Japanese market will be prioritized to help achieve this goal.

In Tokyo, Tencent Cloud also held a salon for local gaming companies, promoting its full-stack cloud computing capabilities to help them build infrastructure, publish games, and monetize.

Tencent Cloud has formed preliminary cooperation agreements with Japanese gaming company Pitaya and IT company E-business.

Tencent Cloud said that its business was ranked sixth in terms of global market share in 2018, citing data from Gartner. In the same year, Alibaba’s cloud business had the third largest market share of 7.7% worldwide, behind Amazon and Microsoft.

Alibaba Cloud has partnered with SoftBank since 2016 to offer cloud services through joint venture SB Cloud, according to Alibaba’s website. Alibaba Cloud has also partnered with MITSUI & Co., NEC, ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation (CTC), Bit Media, and Pixel in the Japanese market.
