Sogou to develop Arabic-speaking AI news anchor for the Middle East

China’s second largest search engine Sogou will develop a life-like AI anchor to present news in Arabic and English on multiple channels of Abu Dhabi Media (ADM), a media and entertainment company headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, according to a press release by the company.

“This marks the first time that Sogou’s AI News Anchor technology is being leveraged by an international media platform,” said Wang Yanfeng, general manager of Sogou’s Voice Interaction Technology Center, at the company’s signing ceremony with ADM, which was held Sunday in Abu Dhabi, capital of UAE.

Back in November, Sogou and China’s Xinhua News Agency jointly launched the world’s first batch of AI news anchors, which look just like a real human and – of course – could present news tirelessly and non-stoppingly 7X24. One of the anchors is Chinese-speaking and modelled after Xinhua news Anchor Qiu Hao.

“The use of artificial intelligence and technological tools in the media sector will result in a qualitative leap forward within the media landscape in the UAE and the wider region”, said Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE’s Minister of Artificial Intelligence, on the ceremony.

He added that the use of these advanced solutions will benefit the industry by enriching media content and supporting media research.

Likewise, Ali Bin Tamim, director general of Abu Dhabi Media, said that by launching the AI news anchor, the company is writing a new chapter in the Arabic media industry.
