Samsung Pay swipes into Indonesia

After four years of speculation regarding its launch date, Samsung Pay officially entered Indonesia last Friday.

The app comes pre-installed on Samsung’s latest smartphone models, the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50. Other Samsung users who use the Android 9.0 operating system can also download the application via the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store. The payment platform uses QR code technology to facilitate transactions between its digital wallets.

According to the company, Samsung takes a localized approach for every launch. It also works with existing payment services so that Samsung Pay can integrate with the country’s existing payment infrastructure. In Indonesia, Samsung Pay is partnering with Ant Financial-backed mobile wallet platform DANA to conduct closed beta testing on some devices. Currently, all Samsung Pay users in Indonesia must have an existing account with DANA.

In the near future, Samsung Pay will collaborate with more digital payment platforms to expand its services in Southeast Asia’s most populous country.

That collaborative development, which involved input from local stakeholders explains why Samsung Pay’s entry into Indonesia is a bit late compared to the payments platform’s presence in some other countries in the region, according to Irfan Rinaldi, Samsung Electronics Indonesia product marketing manager.

Samsung Pay is available in 24 markets. In Southeast Asia, the app has already landed in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
