KEY STAT | Tencent’s gaming revenue grows as fast as during its peak in 2017

Tencent’s online gaming business continues to show strong growth with a total revenue of USD 6.3 billion in the third quarter, or a daily average of USD 68 million, the internet giant said in its earnings release on Thursday.

The 45% year-on-year growth rate, the highest since Q3 2017, indicates that the world’s biggest video game publisher has gained back the momentum of the years before 2018, when the company’s business was impacted by tightened rules on teenage gaming and a 10-month freeze on game licenses by Chinese regulators.

Another highlight of the quarter has been the success of its blockbuster mobile game Honor of Kings, which earlier this month reported average daily active users (DAU) of over 100 million, making it the first video game ever to claim this amount of users for the 10th straight month.

According to 36kr, DAUs of Honor of Kings, which is also the top-grossing mobile game in the world, broke the 100-million mark long ago. Tencent’s timing of disclosing it now is suggesting that the public opinion on the game and the regulatory environment have improved.
