Huawei ships 100 million smartphones globally as of May

Despite Huawei remaining in the crosshairs of the United States government, the company has shipped 100 million smartphone devices worldwide as of the end of May.

The head of Huawei’s smartphone division, He Gang, announced the news at the launch of the company’s Nova 5 phone today, effectively rejecting earlier reports that its overseas sales have slumped.

Earlier this week, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said his company’s revenue could drop by USD 30 billion this year because of poor performance in its overseas market.

However, Ren walked back on the pessimistic forecast in an interview with CNBC on Wednesday. “It’s just that there might be declines overseas. In the worst case, 40%, but now it’s less than 20%. And that kind of decline is also changing. As I look at the declines in the consumer business, that would be about 10% roughly, so it’s not that big,” he said.

Ren said the company’s consumer business had not seen a decline yet because of its bullish Chinese market.

The Shenzhen-based telecoms giant surpassed Apple in China’s premium market (USD 600 to USD 800) for the first time in the first quarter of 2019, according to Counterpoint Research.
