Huawei expected to unveil first “smart TV set” next month

Huawei will unveil its first ever smart TV set in April, expanding beyond telecom infrastructure and smartphones, online news site jiemian.com reported, citing unidentified sources with the company’s TV supply chain.

Beijing-based BOE will supply 55-inch display screens while Shenzhen China Star Optoelectronics Technology Company Limited will provide 65-inch screens, said the sources, adding that Gaochuang (Suzhou) Electrics Company Limited will be the contract manufacturer.

The TV set, which might be equipped with a dual camera feature, would enable game playing and socializing, according to jiemian.com.

Huawei has even set an annual sales target of 10 million units for its new TV business, indicating it would like to be the top seller industrywide, according to the sources.

Huawei declined to comment on jiemian.com’s report.

However, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group told reporters on March 14th that Huawei was in discussions with partners on whether they could together provide a smart speaker with screens, which could work as a TV set.

At that time, he said that Huawei is not thinking about getting into the traditional home appliance business, saying that this industry “has entered the AI era”.
