Grab and Volocopter to conduct air-taxi feasibility study in Southeast Asia

Grab and German air mobility startup Volocopter will conduct a joint feasibility study to explore the potential of air taxis in Southeast Asia, according to a statement from Grab.

The study will examine suitable cities and routes for air taxis in Southeast Asia, evaluate the optimal uses for such services, and explore the possibility of joint flight tests by the two companies.

The findings will lay the groundwork for potential future cooperation between Grab and Volocopter, which could include launching services related to urban air mobility.

Grab Ventures CEO Chris Yeo said the partnership will enable Volocopter to develop urban air mobility solutions tailored for commuters in Southeast Asia by leveraging Grab’s customer and traffic data in 339 cities in the region.

Potential air mobility solutions will give another boost to Grab’s existing comprehensive ecosystem, which already includes a range of on-demand services mostly focused on transport, food delivery and mobile payments.

Last October, Volocopter unveiled the world’s first air-taxi station in Singapore as part of a week-long demonstration.
