First physical store authorised by Alibaba’s Tmall opens in Malaysia, driving local new retail concept

Malaysian private company Lumahgo Sdn Bh and local lifestyle furniture retailer Lorenzo havejoined hands to launch a physical store for selected Tmall items in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city.

The 5,000 sq ft store, dubbed Taobao Selection x LumahGo, and located on the first floor of Viva Home Shopping Mall, is authorised by Alibaba’s Tmall.com. It’s also the first of its kind in Malaysia, looking to bridge the online and offline retailing space.

Considering that 98% of furniture shopping transactions are still done offline in Southeast Asia, the lifestyle store aims to target those non-tech savvy customers who prefer to shop offline, but also giving the old-fashioned experience a technology touch, through big data and technologies provided by Alibaba. The Chinese e-commerce giant has been experimenting in its home market with technologies to combine the online and offline channels in a concept dubbed new retail.

LumahGo Chief Executive Officer Fabian Kong said that the new retail technology experience would help local furniture crafts gaining global attention. “We are developing a new retail system that caters to Malaysians, which will bring a new retail technology experience to local retailers,” said Kong as quoted by Thestar.

The strategic partnership was witnessed by Primary Industries Minister, Teresa Kok who said that the past years the country has seen an increase in furniture industry export, and the partnership between Lumahgo and Tmall World will help drive the export furthermore.
