Baidu, which operates China’s largest search engine, will set up a cloud computing center in Xi’an, the capital of Northwest China’s Shannxi province, to serve its clients in the country’s central and western regions. A total of 100,000 servers will be installed in the cloud computing center, which will cover an area of nearly 84,700 square meters, said the company in a press release sent to KrASIA on Sunday.
Last week, Baidu said in a separate press release that Baidu Cloud ranked fourth in market share among public cloud service providers in China in the fourth quarter of 2018, citing IDC’s China Public Cloud Services Tracker.
Total spending on public and private cloud infrastructure in China reached USD 12.1 billion in 2018, up nearly 75% year-on-year and accounting for 12% of the global market.
In the last three months of 2018, AliCloud held onto a 40.5% share of Chinese cloud infrastructure, while Tencent Cloud maintained 16.5%, according to Synergy Research Group, a US-based market researcher. They were followed by Sinnet, China Telecom, and China Unicom.
