Alibaba’s cross-border e-commerce platform AliExpress allies with search engine Naver to boost sales to South Korean consumers

Alibaba’s AliExpress.com, a standalone e-commerce site allowing people outside China to buy products from the country, confirmed with KrAsia on Wednesday that the company has entered a cooperation with Naver, South Korea’s largest search engine.

Since August 5, individuals can search products on AliExpress via Naver and finish the purchase transactions by clicking back to AliExpress’ site. This new functionality of Naver is similar to Google Shopping, which provides its users easier access to various e-commerce sites.

This is the first time Naver has entered into such a cooperation with a shopping site outside its home country.

And this model is well received in South Korean, said AliExpress, giving an example that 1,000 units of Xiaomi Mi Band 4, a smart wearable, sold out in less than three hours after the search-and-buy function became available.

Prior to this cooperation, in 2018, AliExpress had experienced sales growth in South Korea. The company revealed that on Nov 11 2018 goods sold via AliExpress to Korean consumers increased 100% and on Black Friday, deal value increased 180%, without providing details.

AliExpress has also finished building several logistics routs starting January this year between China and South Korea, allowing nearly 70% of parcels to be delivered to the hands of buyers within 15 days. Previously the percentage was about 35%.
