CHINA BRIEF | Tesla suspends production at Shanghai factory as COVID-19 pandemic hurts supply chain

US-based electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla has yet to resume production at its Gigafactory in Shanghai following the five-day Labour Day holiday which ended on Tuesday May 5, tech media 36Kr reported on Thursday, citing sources inside the company.

The suspension might continue until May 9, the source added.

Other Tesla employees in China told 36Kr that the inefficient supply of spare parts needed for production from outside of China is part of the reasons for the temporary suspension, as the COVID-19 pandemic is still expanding in Mexico and the United States, where some of Tesla’s auto parts suppliers are based.

Tesla has not responded to 36Kr’s request for comments.

The EV maker has already suspended its automobile production lines in New York and Fremont since late March, according to the company’s website.
