China to crack down on illegal user data collection

Beijing has decided that it will no longer tolerate illegal user data collection by websites and apps.

This month, the country’s market regulator launched a six-month campaign to crack down on activities that violate information privacy, which include the collecting, leaking, and selling of personal data illegally.

The crackdown highlights websites, apps, and cold calling centers as examples with more consumer complaints than the average rate.

Last month, staff members and executives of the Beijing-based online resume scraper Qiaoda Group were reportedly detained by police for illegally collecting personal information without their users’ consent.
