28-year-old Chinese crypto boss is shelling out USD 4.6 million for lunch with Warren Buffett

Cryptocurrency pioneer Justin Sun has won an online bid for a lunch with Warren Buffett—a meal that will cost him USD 4.57 million.

“I officially announce I’ve won the record-setting 20th-anniversary charity lunch hosted by @WarrenBuffett. I’ll also invite #blockchain industry leaders to meet with a titan of investment. I hope this benefits everyone,” the 28-year-old Chinese entrepreneur posted on Twitter, with a picture showing the bidding amount on Monday.

Sun, the founder of blockchain platform Tron, has a tainted reputation in the Chinese startup circle. He was nicknamed the “Jia Yueting of Cryptocurrency,” a thinly-veiled dig at the fact that Sun, like the LeEco boss, is now staying in the United States in order to avoid a potential probe after their businesses turned out to be a sham.

The price of Sun’s cryptocurrency Tron peaked at USD 0.25 in January 2018 and Sun reportedly sold 6 billion Tron at its peak. Tron’s price has since plunged and it’s currently worth little more than USD 0.03.

It is not immediately clear if Warren Buffett was aware of the reputation of his young lunch partner, but the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway once slammed cryptocurrency as “rat poison squared.”
